1. Open a self-directed HSA Investment Account with TD Ameritrade
- Download and complete the PDF application
- Fax the completed application to HSA Bank at (920) 803-4120
- Your TD Ameritrade Welcome Kit will arrive 5-7 business days after your application is received.
2. Transfer Funds
To ensure accurate IRS reporting, send all HSA funds through HSA Bank before investing them. Funds may not be sent directly to TD Ameritrade.
- Funds can be transferred through HSA Bank's Internet Banking or by contacting HSA Bank's Client Assistance Center at (800) 357-6246. Funds transferred before 2:00 p.m., CT, will be available within two business days.
Note: If your HSA balance falls below $5,000, you may incur a monthly investment fee. You may transfer up to $10,000 per day through HSA Bank's Internet Banking.
3. Make a Trade Through TD Ameritrade
Access your TD Ameritrade account 24/7 online at www.tdameritraderetirement.com or through TD Ameritrade's Interactive Voice Response system at (866) 766-4015. This number can also be used to reach TD Ameritrade representatives.
Website Trades
Your brokerage account number will be provided in your TD Ameritrade Welcome Kit. A separate mailing will be sent with your PIN. The first time you go to TD Ameritrade's secure trading website and log in, enter your brokerage account number and PIN. You will be prompted to create a username and password. All trading can be done via this site at your convenience.
Telephone Trades
Call TD Ameritrade at (866) 766-4015 to place a trade over the phone. TD Ameritrade's interactive telephone system will guide you through the quote and order process. Instructions for the telephone system can be found in your TD Ameritrade Welcome Kit. You may also download instructions for using this system at www.tdameritraderetirement.com.
Broker Trades
Call TD Ameritrade at (866) 766-4015 and select the option to speak with a broker. Brokers are available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Central Time.
4. Return Funds to Your HSA
Investment funds can be returned to your HSA as needed. To return your funds, sell the amount of shares equal to the amount of funds you would like to return to your HSA. When your trade has settled into the default cash sweep vehicle, log in to HSA Bank's Internet Banking or contact HSA Banks' Client Assistance Center to transfer the funds. Note: Fund will be available in your Health Savings Account within two business days.
